Supreme Court Strengthens SWM Enforcement Through District Collectors

Following the Supreme Court’s May 5 order and MoEFCC delegation under Section 5 of the Environment Protection Act, District Collectors now hold explicit enforcement authority against non-compliant Bulk Waste Generators (BWGs). Through dedicated “Special Cells,” authorities can issue binding directions — including suspension of water and electricity services for entities such as hotels, malls, and hospitals. This significantly increases the urgency for scalable, compliant on-site and off-site waste processing infrastructure.
